Computer Vision and Image UnderstandingSpecial Issue on Image and Video Understanding in Big Data

The big data era has brought with it new challenges to computer vision and image understanding. More scalable and robust methods are required to efficiently index, retrieve, organize and interact with big visual data. One can only think to the amount of image/video data downloaded every minute in social media or to the number of surveillance cameras installed in our cities nowadays. Both cases are not manageable without automatic or semi-automatic (e.g., human-in-the-loop) approaches capable of distill useful information from a large quantity of raw data.

This special issue covers a wide range of topics, with a common denominator devoted to the analysis for understanding of images and videos. Submissions are invited for contributions from both established and new trends in computer vision, pattern recognition and image processing, addressing either theoretical or applicational challenges, with a particular emphasis on the following themes:

•     Video Analysis & Understanding
•     Multi-view Geometry and 3D Computer Vision
•     Learning for Image and Video Recognition
•     Image Analysis, Detection and Recognition
•    Application Systems for Big Visual Data Understanding

This special issue is linked to the 18th International Conference on Image Analysis and Processing, ICIAP 2015, a well-established conference series organized biennially by the Italian Member Society (GIRPR) of the International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR). The special issue will collect the extended versions of the best papers of the conference. Additional papers are invited for original contributions to the following extended topics of interest.
