Special Issue on Ubiquitous Biometrics
Biometric sensors are ubiquitous in mobile and wearable devices, smart TVs, video games, service robots, CCTV cameras and identification systems. On the one hand, the explosion of ubiquitous biometric data provides us unprecedented opportunities to train robust and accurate pattern recognition methods for person identification or demographic prediction. For example, there has been a significant progress in improving face recognition accuracy due to big data driven machine learning methods. Moreover, ubiquitous biometric technique may be transformed to many killer applications in our society, e.g., Apple Pay, pay by selfie with Mastercard, video surveillance based person re-identification, national identity management such as the Aadhaar project in India. On the other hand, ubiquitous biometrics also bring big challenge to traditional pre-processing, feature analysis, pattern matching, and information retrieval methods in biometric authentication. For example, how do the traditional biometric recognition algorithms learn from the web-scale biometric data in social media? How to efficiently identify a given subject from mobile or wearable devices? These challenging problems should motivate us to develop novel ideas and innovative solutions to biometric recognition.
This special issue targets the researchers and practitioners from both academia and industry, and provides a forum to gather cutting-edge research and state-of-the-art achievements on ubiquitous biometrics (face, iris, fingerprint, palm-print, gait and etc.).
The areas of interest include, but are not limited to:
Novel sensors for ubiquitous biometrics
Advanced verification methods for ubiquitous biometrics
Gender/Ethnicity/Age estimation methods for ubiquitous biometrics
Heterogeneous matching/ Multi-biometric methods for ubiquitous biometrics
Machine learning algorithms for ubiquitous biometrics
Indexing/hashing methods for ubiquitous biometrics
Affective computing with ubiquitous biometric data
Biometric anti-spoofing with ubiquitous biometric data
Security of ubiquitous biometrics
Benchmarks for research on ubiquitous biometrics
Applications of ubiquitous biometrics
